Gifted and Talented

At John Kelly Girls’ Technology College we aim to provide an inclusive atmosphere for learning so that all students can develop to the best of their ability. Gifted and Talented students are identified by the college either on the basis of their academic ability, or by staff who recognise their special talents in subjects such as Art, Music, Drama and Physical Education .

Once identified, every effort is made to ensure that the opportunities made available to those students on the Gifted and Talented register enable them to develop themselves to the full. Students will participate in activities which not only enhance their academic journey but also extend their learning beyond the classroom. Most faculties within the college run enrichment activities and clubs which Gifted and Talented students can participate in. Examples include; Astronomy club, Cheerleading and Computer club for Girls …… Some faculties have links with outside organisations. These links allow students to put their skills to good use in real life situations. e.g The Vocational education faculty have links with the Brilliant Women organisation (a group of top business women). Gifted students in business are given the opportunity to attend dinner evenings with the women. There are many trips which take place throughout the year that extend the learning experience beyond the classroom. The venues can range from theatres and museums to universities and observatories, some of which are overseas e.g some students visited an observatory in Portugal as part of Astronomy club.

In addition to all of the above, Gifted and Talented students can expect to be challenged within the classroom, by activities which stretch their minds and enhance their thinking skills.
