IT Essentials 1: PC Hardware and Software


students workingIT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software, sponsored by Hewlett-Packard, presents an in-depth exposure to computer hardware and operating systems. Students learn the functionality of hardware and software components as well as suggested best practices in maintenance, and safety issues. Through hands on activities and labs, students learn how to assemble and configure a computer, install operating systems and software, and troubleshoot hardware and software problems. In addition, an introduction to networking is included.

students workingThe IT Essentials I: PC Hardware and Software course is an introduction to the basics of computer hardware and network operating systems. At the end of this course students should possess the academic information and experience necessary to pass CompTIA's A+ certification. This certification is to test the student's knowledge of learning objectives for a career as a Computer Repair Technician. The course is for Post 16 and adult students (between 3 and 6 hours per week delivered over one year (approx. 100 hours tuition).

  • Full time enrolled J.K.T.C. students who may take the course to prepare for an additional qualification.
  • Full time enrolled students who opt to take the ITE 1 course in conjunction with a package of related IT professional courses. These students could be “gap” year students.
  • Part time, fee-paying adult students.


Certification: The IT Essentials I provides the opportunity to prepare for the first level of certification: the CompTIA A+ which will lay the foundation for a career as an IT professional. It is designed to meet employment standards for the IT industry. It also lays the foundation for networking courses e.g. Cisco CCNA and CCNP certifications which are globally recognised as the World’s no. 1 networking qualifications. Similarly, it prepares the student to take IT Essentials 2 which leads to the CompTIA Server + qualification.
